Welcome to the first in my Discovering Manchester series – blogs all about my favourite things to do, places to see and food to eat in this beautiful city.

There’s nothing better after a day of walking and exploring a city in the sunshine, than sitting down to some great food.

James and I went in to the city centre on Saturday to have a good nosy around the Northern Quarter. It was the best kind of day, full of vintage clothes, quirky shops and amazing independent bars and restaurants.

We decided we wanted some tea, but nothing too fancy. Something more chilled, relaxed, to match the atmosphere buzzing through the city.

We’re both vegetarian, which sometimes makes finding food in the Northern Quarter tricky – but as we stumbled upon Home Sweet Home in the middle of Edge St, there was a simultaneous nod of ‘yes, here will do’.

Part of the American diner vibe that seems so trendy these days, Home Sweet Home really does feel welcoming. Light, friendly decor and a menu of US classic meals, there’s a great amount of choice, with a good three or four different veggie options.

I opted for the mac and cheese, and James went for the halloumi fajitas – we both got a side of sweet potato fries too!

It was my first time trying mac and cheese, and it was beautifully creamy and rich – so rich, I actually could only eat half of it. The garlic bread was freaking heavenly and the perfect accompaniment, and the crispy sweet potato fries dipped in James’s chipotle soured cream was all kinds of tasty. Note – the side of fries is pretty big, we’d definitely only order one to share next time!

We actually swapped meals and I tried the fajitas too – the halloumi was really nicely cooked (another first try for me!) and we’re going to try and replicate this dish at home. You can find out more about Home Sweet Home on their website here.

Overall, the service was lovely, the atmosphere was really relaxed and nice, and when the bill came, we were very pleasantly surprised – all that for just over £30? Yes please!

We’ll be back, Home Sweet Home
